Mekong River Delta: rice price keeps falling Source: http://eyesonvietnam.com Last Modified: May 21, 2009 23:30 Recently, rice price in Mekong River Delta has been on the decline. On May 21, the price of IR 50404 rice was 3,600 VND/kg, long-rice like Om 4900 was 4,000 VND/kg, jasmine aromatic rice was 4,400 VND/kg, declining 600 VND/kg from that of last month. The price of short-rice was 4,800 VND/kg, the long type was 5,500 VND/kg. According to many food enterprises in An Giang province, the purchasing and the price of rice have been slumping because processing and exporting enterprises limited buying material rice. Mr. Duong Quoc Nghia, vice president of Dong Thap province department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that farmers used up high price to sell rice in the last winter-spring crop to get money for producing the next crop, thus there is not much rice left in the folk. So far, the whole province has harvested 5,000 ha of summer-autumn rice. Mr. Quoc added that the rice price decrease these days is caused by the export price and purchasing progress but not by the holdup and slump. |
